Sony Ericcson Xperia X10 (Android 2.1) Review

Sexy – Thats the first word that came to my mind when i saw the Sony Ericcson Xperia X10 . The phone comes with the ancient dead android 1.6 aka donut . So I tried to update it to 2.1 through the PC utility i found on the site only to realize that it took me more than 8 tries to successfully upgrade the OS. So the piece i am reviewing is a Luster White Xperia X10 (personally i think it looks better than the black one ) running android 2.1 aka Eclair .

Design and Construction
If you are one of those people who cares alot about your phones’ look more than its performance and wondering whether to buy this piece then stop reading and go BUY NOW .Sony Ericsson always managed to make me go “whoa ” with their killer designs even if its a cheap walkman phone. The phone comes with a big 4 inch screen and trust me it will surely catch everyones eyes when you use it in public(Thats a good thing) .
There are three keys below the screen -Menu,Home and Back with backlight. The right side of the X10 has a dedicated camera key and key and volume/zoom keys. The top of the X10 has a micro USB port, the earphone jack(3.5mm) and the power button . One thing I must warn you is the protective flap for the USB port is irritating and I find it totally hard to plug in the cable . The earphone jack has no protective cover/flap or anything.
I am not sure about the build quality as i am not so stupid to try and drop my 24K phone to test that especially after its full plastic body which seems a bit fragile to me .(PS- I have read it from some other review that the plastic is really strong and strong )

I am impressed by the display. But its a 65K colour display and not 16M -this sucks a bit as everyone hoped that this would have been upgraded during the Eclair update . Blue is my favorite color and i love the interface . Watching movies on the 4 inch screen is not a bad experience after all . Do note the phone still doesn’t have multi-touch even if its price tag is on the high end phone range.

User Interface
User Interface has been tweaked a bit by Sony . Although there is one thing which i really missed on this phone and which my Galaxy5 has – when i pull down the top notification bar i can toggle wifi, blutetooth, silent mode etc . This is a really cool feature and easier rather than the power widget . UI is pretty sexy and really fast with the snapdragon processor . I didn’t find any lag.
Timescape – A bit over hyped according to me, but not bad . It feels good to check out all those social network feeds and texts . More like tweetdeck like app with a sexy interface . One update status on facebook , tweet etc . Timescape can be added to the homescreen(I recommend that )
Mediascape – Or simply the gallery .When you open the mediascape you get three categories – Music,Photo and
Videos .There is nothing much out of the ordinary to tell about this other than the fact that there is no equalizers . Viewing photos is really a nice thing other than the zooming part . The phone is not loud in loudspeaker then again its not a walkman phone but teh audio quality is really good and the bundled bass earphones are sexy and does its job according to me.

Camera,Video Recording
8MP camera -SEXY . This is one of those features that made the phone stand out when it was released . The phone has a 8 MP camera with LED flash and can take photos at a maximum resolution of 3264 x 2448 pixels . I am really impressed with camera and i have tried  it different situations and they performed pretty well .  But its pretty hard to turn on flash or light . One has to mess around a bit and this can’t be done so fast .

The X10 has HD video recording after the 2.1 update . Now that is really good .  I have used it for different “challenging situations” and its really good with its continuous autofocus .

I will post the videos and a pictures i recorded later . Sorry for the inconvenience .

This is just a typical Eclair browser with no flash support . And i suggest that you download Opera Mini or some other browser from the market if you browse alot .

Wifi ,GPRS  and Bluetooth Connectivity

Wifi – I used the wifi of the xperia x10 for a short while and everything went along smoothly.  Any person cans set up a wifi connection without any issue . I downloaded alot of videos and applications and i didn’t get disconnected while this was not the case when i tried using a mircomax a60 (i got disconnected four times in an hour )

GPRS – gprs connectivity had some issues and i still have them but i think Vodafone India get the blame for that .

Bluetooth – Bluetooth connectivity with other phones is perfect . But note that your phone will be hidden even if you turn the bluetooth on . You have to go to settings and make the phone discoverable .

Much better than an iphone :p   . Ok seriously the phone has its issues but its good investment . Also the phone will be getting an Android 2.3 update in the near future . With such great looks and a decent camera the Xperia X10 is definitely . But do give the Xperia Arc a look before you make any purchase .

Cons :-

*Heats up sometimes

* No Front camera

*No XviD or DivX

*No FM radio

*No flash support for broswer

*Camera needs a better flash

*No multi-touch

*Awesome camera

*Stylish looks

*Android( Yes i am a android fanboy)
